The Fuss About Flouride

What’s all the fuss about fluoride?

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral and the benefits of this mineral can have a huge impact on your oral health. According the the American dental association fluoride can help prevent tooth decay in as much as 25% in children and adults. In fact, after 70 years of studies on a wide variety of ages, fluoride has been named one of the 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century by the CDC.

There has been debate about fluoridation in public water systems, but the great thing about fluoride is that it already naturally occurs in almost all water sources and even bottled water. The unfortunate thing is that the levels of fluoride needed to achieve those benefits are lacking. By drinking fluoridated water you can save yourself money when it comes to the average dental visit. Studies have shown that for every $1 spent on fluoride in your water, you could save as much as $38 at the dentist office! While a New York study showed that counties where fluoride is lacking have an average of 33.4% more visits to the dentist for fillings, root canals, and extractions… Yikes!

Whether your live in an area where fluoride is abundant in your water or not, it is always beneficial to talk to your healthcare provider about ways you can incorporate fluoride into your daily routine and achieve outstanding oral health..
