What Are Dentures?

Dentures are removable dental prosthetics for people who have lost some or all of their teeth. Dentures replace missing teeth and helps to restore daily functions, like eating and speaking. They can also protect the remaining teeth, prevent the face from drooping, and boost a person’s confidence.

Dentures can be suitable for short-term or long-term use and aren’t permanently attached to the mouth. They are a great option for people who need to restore the look and function of their teeth. We will work with you during your transition to dentures to make your new teeth comfortable and functional for you.

Types of Restorative Dentures

Complete Dentures

Partial Dentures

Complete dentures, also known as full dentures, are removable devices that replace a full set of teeth. When a patient has lost all their teeth, artificial teeth are affixed to a base that securely adheres to the gums through suction. There are two types of complete dentures: immediate and conventional.

Immediate dentures are made for those who have recently undergone tooth extraction in preparation for dentures. They serve as temporary replacements while the gums heal from the extraction procedure. Once the mouth has fully healed (typically within a month to six months), the immediate dentures can be replaced with conventional dentures.

Conventional dentures are made after the natural teeth have been extracted and the mouth has completely healed. These prosthetics are made for long-term use. If tooth extraction is not needed, we may create conventional dentures for the patient right away.

For those who do not need a replacement for a full set of teeth, partial dentures are a great solution. These removable prosthetics fill empty spaces left by missing teeth and prevent the remaining teeth from shifting out of place.

Implant Dentures in Santa Maria, Lompoc, and Santa Maria, CA

Pathway Dental Group is proud to be one of the only dental practices to offer implant dentures to patients in Santa Barbara, Lompoc, and Santa Maria, CA. You may have heard implant dentures referred to as “fixed dentures,” “snap on dentures,” or “all on 4 dentures”. While typical dentures often shift while eating and speaking, implant-supported dentures remain secured in place. Those who choose standard dentures at first often upgrade to implant dentures for a more comfortable and natural experience day in and day out!

Locator Dentures

All on 4/All on X dentures utilize four or more strategically placed dental implants in the jawbone to support a full arch of artificial teeth. One of the significant benefits of these dentures is their ability to provide a fixed, permanent solution without individual implants for each missing tooth. This not only reduces the overall cost but also minimizes the amount of surgery and recovery time required. Additionally, the implant-supported dentures offer exceptional stability, allowing wearers to enjoy a more natural bite and chew comfortably. As a result, individuals with All on 4/All on X dentures can regain their confidence, smile freely, and experience improved speech and better overall oral health.

Locator or “snap in” dentures can be a great option for patients looking for something in between a completely removable denture and a fixed denture.  Locator dentures “snap” into implants in your jaw and allow you to remove the dentures to clean and for repairs as needed.  They are a much more secure option than removable dentures alone. They provide the benefits of implants and are a more economical choice while delivering many chewing and stability attributes of a fixed option.

Implant Dentures Cost (With and Without Insurance)

The cost of snap-in dentures, also known as locator dentures, varies depending on the surgery required, grafting required, anesthesia options, restoration type, and other factors. We will provide you with a full treatment plan at your consultation appointment so you know what to expect from start to finish.

As with all of our treatments, we provide financing options so everyone can get the care they need.

How Do Dentures Work?

Dentures work by resting on the gums, being supported by remaining teeth, or snapping into place in the case of fixed dentures, providing functional and aesthetic benefits. Here’s the process for getting dentures:

  1. An initial consultation is conducted to evaluate your oral health, discuss treatment options, and determine the best type of dentures for your needs.
  2. We will take state-of-the-art 3D scans of your jaw, teeth, and gums to create accurate models.
  3. We will then design your new smile with our laboratory to be sure your new teeth are natural looking and as functional for your mouth as possible.
  4. Any necessary adjustments are made to ensure proper fit and function.
  5. Once the final denture is made, it is placed in your mouth and further adjustments may be made to achieve optimal comfort and bite.

Proper denture care, including regular cleaning and storage, is necessary to prolong your dentures’ lifespan and prevent oral health issues. Remember that regular dental check-ups are important to maintain your oral health and ensure the dentures are working properly.
